Individual Psychotherapy vs. Individual Relationship Counseling

The Difference

The difference between individual psychotherapy and individual relationship counseling lies mainly in focus and goals, even though both involve one-on-one sessions with a therapist or counselor. Here’s a breakdown:

Individual Psychotherapy

  • Focus: The person’s mental health, emotional well-being, and personal growth.

  • Topics Covered: Depression, anxiety, trauma, self-esteem, identity, stress management, life transitions, etc.

  • Goal: To help the individual understand themselves better, process emotions, and improve overall mental health.

Individual Relationship Counseling

  • Focus: The individual’s experience within their relationships—usually romantic, but can include family, friends, or coworkers.

  • Topics Covered: Relationship patterns, communication issues, trust, attachment styles, conflict resolution, breakups, or wanting to improve a relationship.

  • Goal: To help the person understand their role in relationships, resolve interpersonal issues, or navigate a current or past relationship.

Example Scenario:

  • Individual Therapy: You explore childhood trauma that affects your self-worth and leads to anxiety in many areas of life.

  • Individual Relationship Counseling: You explore why you keep ending up in emotionally unavailable relationships and work on changing that pattern.
